Fussy Cutting with Stamps

Jo Morton’s recent blog post about her little hexagon paper piecing got me thinking, “How can I fussy cut with my template stamps?”

I worked at this method in my studio and it works!  You will need a piece of template plastic, pencil, fine line permanent marker, fabric and ink.

First, stamp your stamp onto a piece of template plastic, then trace around the whole block of wood with a permanent marker.  (The ink will take a little while to dry.  Go make your self a cup of coffee while you wait.)

You will have something like this…

Let the ink dry or it will smudge. (Ask me how I KNOW this!)

Next lay your template onto the back side of your chosen fabric.  (Okay, I know that is going to take you some time to CHOOSE your fabric, so go back to the coffee…)

Use a pencil to trace a motif out of the chosen fabric.  By using a pencil, you can erase the motifs you chose for one block and reuse it for the next one.

Use a pencil to trace parts of the motif.

Now trace the outside of the rectangle template using a permanent marker onto the back side of your fabric, matching the little motifs along the print.  (I needed 4 for this shape.) I used a permanent marker because I needed to see the rectangle clearly before I stamped.  You can use a white pencil if using dark fabrics.

Now line up your stamp on the permanent marker lines and stamp!

OOOO!  Here comes the EXCITING part…  Now cut out all your pieces and arrange them.

Wow! Look what I got!

Of course the next question you are going to ask is, “Will it work for any other shape?”  YES, it will!  I haven’t sewn mine together yet, but here is the Aunt Hattie’s Hexagon.

I love this!

So, have fun with your stamps and FUSSY CUT some of your shapes!  Happy Stitching!
